Baidu (BIDU), the Chinese search engine giant has launched ‘Total View’ feature for its Baidu maps service. Total view is the Baidu version of Google maps’ ‘Street View’. Since street view isn’t present in China, Baidu’s new service is effectively the first street view service covering china. The service currently covers only three cities which, according to the company, is going to change soon. The new feature from Baidu maps follows last September introduction of services like discount vouchers for selected retailers and restaurants, an upgraded voice navigation system, indoor navigation for malls, and real-time traffic and public transport information. In a push to attract more users, Baidu has been increasingly trying to make its map service social in nature by adding features like location sharing and in-map/app chat. Baidu maps, with a market share of 20%, currently holds the second place in the Chinese mapping market behind Autonavi.
