Amazon.com, Inc. Business Profile

Amazon valuation has risen consistently since its IPO even though concerns regarding profitability, competition and several dud products have been raised from time to time. Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon has managed to convince a majority of his investors that Amazon will be the company of the future. Amazon stock price history reflects this belief of the investors. The company has outperformed all the technology stocks since the financial recession.

Amazon was started in 1994 as an online bookstore and slowly spread into other product categories. Since its inception, Jeff Bezos has concentrated on building a high growth model rather than a high margin business. This has been a major concern for the stockholders since day one. However, the company showed that its business model worked when it was able to survive the dot com bubble in 2001 and has recently achieved profitability. Amazon EPS chart had barely managed to stay in the positive area for the last few years. A mixture of high growth and low profits caused a lot of debate on how amazon's stock price would move in the future and the ideal position which investors should take.

Amazon stock trades on the NASDAQ under the tick symbol 'AMZN'. With the entry of several big players in the digital space, the pressure on AMZN stock has increased. AMZN stock has been able to weather competitive pressure due to the higher market share cornered by the company. As the online space saturates AMZN stock will finally be valued based on the profits the firm is able to generate on the back of its massive infrastructure both in the physical and digital world.

Business description:

Amazon.com, Inc., is an international online retailer, being predominantly popular in North America. Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon relies on convenience, and competitive pricing compared to its brick and mortar counterparts like Walmart (WMT) to provide the consumer with a vast range of products that are sold by Amazon itself or by third party sellers. Amazon started as an online bookstore, and quickly diversified into electronics, apparel, furniture, with the latest addition being grocery. Amazon has been a darling of the stock market for a long time now with AMZN stock price rising steadily since 2002.

Amazon Web Services and devices like Kindle Fire are other revenue streams for Amazon. AWS provides technology infrastructure and cloud computing services, and has emerged as the next major growth driver for Amazon. It competes directly with Rackspace (RAX) and Microsoft Corporation's (MSFT) Windows Azure offering. In the tablet space, AMZN's Kindle Fire competes with popular tablet brands like Apple's (AAPL) IPad.

If it crashes 50% and profit goes up x10, it will still be a 23 P/E...

Amazon allows you to gift Prime, just in time for the holidays.. i think it should try something more to lure customers. BestBuy is launching its “holiday price guarantee”, a whole week before Black Friday. The game is tough online, with lesser margins, and so many options to choose from. Value chains cannot give up the extra dollar and have to find innovative ways to increase sales!

AMZN is all set for a short term pullback considering the technicals. A pullback to levels of $ 290- $295 is almost a certainty considering that the stock has pulled away from its 50 SMA.

AMZN refuses the giving away of free smartphones... Just because Amazon is currently focusing on growth rather than profits does not mean people imagine crazy stuff!!

AMZN is a great company when it comes to generating tons of revenue and sky high growth figures. But Bezos does a poor job holding any of that cash. I aint buying the stereotyped 'Investing in the future' story. The companies cash flows speak a lot more than i can put in words here. Look at them beside the numbers EBAY generates and you will know what i mean.

I do hope Bezos knows a bit of magic to pull profits out of an hat. I do understand the importance of marketshare in a competitive market, but a good business brain wouldn't sacrifice profits to the extent Mr Bezos is doing. Hope Amazon investors enjoy the magical ride Mr Bezzos is giving them while i find more certain investments to put my money in. Cant risk hard earned money in a magical ride...Bezos isn't getting me on this one. No way!!

AMZN has a $132 billion market capitalization, 29% of Apple's. Does AMZN stock price make any sense? People have always been thinking that huge profits are just around the corner.. Does not look like, at-least not for another 5 years

Wonder why Jeff Bezos had to buy Washington Post... Buffet did not show any interest in-spite of Berkshire Hathaway being the largest outside shareholder!
