Snap Inc. was founded on September 16, 2011 by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy and is based in Venice, a beachfront neighborhood on the Westside of the Californian city of Los Angeles. Snapchat is the company's flagship product, while the other products are Spectacles, and the Bitmoji app. The company was initially named Snapchat Inc. upon its inception, and was later on rebranded as Snap Inc on September 24, 2016, to include its other products under one company.
Snapchat, the company's most popular product is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application. It became successful due to its unique feature of making pictures and messages inaccessible after a short duration of time. Snapchat began its journey as Picaboo, a selfie app that allowed users to share images that were explicitly short-lived and self-deleting. The product has now evolved into a mix of private messaging and public content. It now includes publications, brand networks, and live events such as music and sports.
Snap Inc. has raised multiple rounds of funding. Funding details are as follows: $485,000 as a seed round followed by an undisclosed amount of bridge funding from Lightspeed Ventures; $13.5 million Series A funding led by Benchmark Capital in February 2013; $60 million funding led by Institutional Venture Partners in June 2013; $50 million in Series C funding from Coatue Management in December 2013. This was followed by four more funding rounds from December 2014 to March 2016 amounting to a total funding of $1.36 billion till date. The company turned down an offer from Facebook for acquisition in 2014. The latest private valuation now stands at $17.8 billion.
Snap Inc. is now due for an IPO in March 2017. The company will list with stock symbol SNAP. SNAP stocks will start to trade on NYSE post the Snap IPO. The company plans to raise up to $3.2 billion. The company has reported growing revenues and increasing losses, and many think that its currently overvalued.
Snap's other products include Spectacles, a pair of smartglasses used by the Snapchat platform distributed exclusively through Snapbot which is Snap's pop-up vending machine; and Bitstrips a web and mobile application that allows users to create a cartoon of themselves and their friends.
